Square of Miracles - Pisa

Piazza del Duomo is the most important artistic and touristic centre of Pisa. In this square, counted amongst UNESCO's World Heritage Sites since 1987, one can enjoy the monuments that form the centre of religious city life, called Miracles (by Gabriele d'Annunzio in 1910) because of their beauty and novelty: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Cemetery and the Bell Tower. This is why the square got the popular name of Square of Miracles.

Pisa Tower

It is known throughout the world for the beauty of its architectural structure, for the singular slope that makes it a true static miracle and for the fact that it is in the context of the famous Square of Miracles, of which it is certainly the jewel.

Museo dell'Opera del Duomo

At the origins of the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, inaugurated in 1986 in the ancient Episcopal Seminary, there was a museographic project started several years before, aimed at making visible and comprehensible the development of Pisan art and in particular of medieval sculpture, born in the centuries-old construction site of the Square of Miracles.

Cathedral

Founded in 1064 it presents in its external face, of Arab origin, a massive use of re-used materials coming from Roman monuments, in order to emphasize the grandeur of the city of Pisa and Rome.

Sinopie Museum

The sinopia is the first phase of realization of the fresco, it is the drawing traced on the first layer of plaster, spreading a red pigmentwith with a brush, clay of Sinòpe mixed with water.

Cemetery

The Camposanto was the last monument to rise on the Piazza del Duomo and its long marble wall delimits the northern border. It was founded in 1277 to house the tombs that had been scattered around the Cathedral until then.

Baptistery

On 15 August of the year 1152 the Baptistery of San Giovanni was founded. Here the sacrament of baptism was administered and the journey of the Christian in the Faith began.

The Goal

Given the complexity of the site of interest, bounded to various priceless historical and artistic details, the place needed protection against vandalism, terrorism and common delinquency , as well as the need for fire detection, video surveillance and detection of potentially dangerous situations in general.
The need consisted in securing a site of absolute artistic and cultural importance keeping harmony, elegance and uniformity of monuments as unaltered as possible. The location of safety devices has been studied considering the need to conceal them and the need for complete and continuous supervision of movements in the area.
